Kristine Lyon - Web 2.0 Tool
Gimkit Live is a review game platform that students can either play synchronously together in the classroom or can be used as an independent content review tool that allows students to play asynchronously on their own time. Instructors input the content for the "kit" manually by typing in individual questions themselves or by syncing study lists from a tool like Quizlet that then Gimkit randomizes to create game questions. When played synchronously, the instructor can choose one of several "game modes" using the same content. For example, my seventh grade students love to play "Trust No One" which is an adaptation on the popular game "Among Us". Two or more students are secretly assigned the role of imposter and the remainder of the class works to figure out who the imposters are. In order for anyone to carry out game actions, they must answer questions correctly to build up points. Another game mode is the classic "earn as much money as you can as fast as you can" Gimkit game. This is model used for independent play as well. As students answer more questions correctly, they earn more money and can buy power-ups that will allow them to earn money even faster as they answer review questions correctly.
Gimkit's platform is easy to use for instructors and students alike. Once you have learned the basic Gimkit game platform, you can easily trasition between game modes to bring variety into the classroom. In my experience, students find Gimkit to be very engaging, and because most of their teachers have used Kahoot! as a review game platform, their Gimkit experience in my classroom is new and exciting. Gimkit reportedly works continuously to update their game platform, which should help to prevent the game from feeling stale or boring.
Find below a link to Gimkit's informational page for Gimkit Live, and a separate link to play the Gimkit review game I created for use in my high school economics class. Your goal is to earn $100,000 by correctly answering economics content questions. Go to the shop to buy power-ups that will increase the pace of your success.
